Can I Take That Back?

It was a farmers market Sunday. I sat behind this table (above) and watched the world go by. (My table to the side is below.)

As happens, kids would walk by. And some clearly had an interest in something or other. I could see it in their eyes. They'd stare a bit before walking on.

So, I called out to one. "You can come over and touch..."

At which point I realized how that sounded. Sometimes I should not be allowed to talk.

(I encourage kids to touch my wares. Most are washable, and all are unbreakable, so it's not like the kids are going to bother anything.)

  1. Tell them they can touch the octopus. That might start an interesting conversation.

  2. You have such a great assortment of wares. I would be curious what caught their attention. Too bad they didn't come back and look around; you might have picked up some marketing insight of what kids their age were interested in.

    1. I had some sales. And yeah, sometimes they just want to look. But if they're close enough, we can talk. And perhaps they might want to buy the next time we run into each other ;)

  6. Maybe it's a good thing they didn't take you up on the touching offer. LOL

  7. Yeah, that's definitely a "phrasing!" moment.

    1. I think they were looking at the hedgehog. Or the spider. Or the donuts. There were a few things right in that spot.

  9. hahaha. That is nice of you to let kids have the tactile experience with your products.

  10. TOUCH!! Well, it's a good way to get folk to buy, ain't it? :)

When I work the markets with my buddy, it always seems to be that folk are standing 15' away sort of looking around to see who might actually be next. End result: no one orders and I'm standing at the order window with nothing to do. I put on my carnival barker schtick: Step right up, ladies and germs! Don't be shy!

It usually results in some smiles and folk move forward.

    1. I'll have to keep that in mind when I have a line of people :)

  11. Oh dear. I have a habit of engaging my mouth before my brain. ;-)

Perhaps you need a nice bright sign inviting people to come and fiddle with your tentacles. ;-)

    1. They'll approach if they want to. Well, the adults, anyway.

  12. Oops! But maybe a sign, like one of your other commenters suggested. Meanwhile, I'd be too shy to ever sell anything, so I'm the wrong person for advice.

    1. I find that if I sit back and let them approach, they'll start the conversation. I'm not great at enticing, but that's not my thing, anyway.

  13. That's not so bad. It's in context.

  14. Ha, ha - probably not an ideal comment in the current climate! But as Red said, it's fine in context. Your creations look wonderful and begging to be touched.

  15. I'm sure those octopuses caught their eye.

    1. I think they were looking at the hedgehog, but my blog readers lover the jellyfish, so I feature them as much as possible.

  16. LOL Yeah, that was poor phrasing.
I often get kids coming up and touching things and I'm fine with it, but then their parents come up and tell them not to touch.

    1. Yes. That. Exactly. That's exactly what happens.

  17. I hate that feeling when you realize how it sounded, but there's nothing you can do.

  18. Your stall is so colourful and pretty I can understand why it would catch their eye. I'd call out something like that too - but I probably wouldn't realise what I'd said.
