Man's Best Friend?
At the heart of much speculative fiction (and fiction in general) is a question. What if? On Tuesdays I like to throw one out there and see what you make of it. Do with it as you please. If a for-instance is not specified, feel free to interpret that instance as you wish. And if you find this becomes a novel-length answer, I'd appreciate a thank you in the acknowledgements ;)
I guess I've been reading too much shifter fiction...
What if you discovered your pet was actually a man (or woman) trapped in animal form?

I appreciate your comments.
I respond to comments* via email, unless your profile email is not enabled. Then, I'll reply in the comment thread. Eventually. Probably.
*Exception: I do not respond to "what if?" comments, but I do read them all. Those questions are open to your interpretation, and I don't wish to limit your imagination by what I thought the question was supposed to be.

I knew it! My cat never behaved like a cat, he was more like a bored banker who tolerated me with my money issues.
ReplyDeleteAha!
DeleteWell, based on our last dog, then I would say that although trapped in a dog's body, he sure got treated like a man with getting to sleep on the warm bed, getting catered to with treats, going on car rides, etc. :)

If it was like the film Ladyhawke, I'd do what I could to break the curse and free her.
ReplyDeleteOh boy...our cat Kaspar would need therapy considering what he does to his bed every night (um....it's really weird and humping it I guess is closest) and then he licks his...you get the idea.
ReplyDeletePerhaps he's been a cat too long...
DeleteIt would explain why one of my cats likes tomato juice and celery and frosting. She's a really weird cat. Frankly, she makes more sense as a person.
ReplyDeleteYour cat is half-way to enjoying a Bloody Mary! :D
DeleteWe would learn more about being better human.
ReplyDeleteCoffee is on
Ah. Well said.
DeleteIt sure would explain a lot if the animal acted very human-like.
ReplyDeleteYeah, it would.
DeleteFirst off, I'd probably offer him or her 'people food' & dispense with the Friskies. I'd also feel terribly about not being able to help them return to human form, but would hope to make the best of a bad/weird situation.
ReplyDeleteWell, if this were an actual story, that would be the next thing. (At least it is in the story I'm contemplating based on this idea.)
DeleteOoh. This does sound intriguing. As it happens, I am rewriting a shapeshifter series of short stories. ~grin~ I'll let you know and give kudos if this ever pops up.
ReplyDeleteIf it helps, great.
DeleteI have long suspected as much.
ReplyDeleteI think you may not be alone in this.
DeleteI'm really a bird in human form. And it's about time someone came along to rescue me. Alana ramblinwitham.blogspot.com
ReplyDeleteThat's a whole different question...
