Lost Pass

It was the very end of the day in the science class at the continuation high school. A student returned from the restroom.

"Pass." I held out my hand.

The boy looked at the floor. "I lost it."

He had been gone a reasonable length of time. It wasn't a long distance. The passes are the size of a half sheet of paper and are laminated. How...?

The explanation was detailed, but it didn't make any sense to me. Something about it getting stuck in some sort of crack and he couldn't get it back out.

"Oooh! You're going to get in trouble..."

I hardly thought so. But the rest of the class enjoyed the idea.

I noted it in the note (so the teacher knew why his restroom pass was missing). Then, due diligence and all, I notified the office as I checked out for the day.

The secretary got out the walkie-talkie to call the school's custodian... (Walkie-talkies are issued to staff that don't stay in one place very long: the principal, the counselor, the custodian, security, etc.) Partly to see if he could retrieve it. (He couldn't. He couldn't find it.) But mostly, to share the funny with those within walkie-talkie range.

Because...pretty funny.

  2. Lost? In a...crack??
And the custodian couldn't find it. The mystery deepens.

  3. Why would he want to lose the one thing that "buys" him a bit of "freedom" from class? Makes no sense :)

  4. I totally believe that a kid could lose a pass in a crack. Or maybe he just had to come up with an interesting story for it.

  5. If his head wouldn't be attached, he'd lose it. Amazing, these airhead kids.

    1. Yeah, well... That's how these kiddos end up at this school in the first place.

  6. Perhaps he is enterprising enough to start a black market hall pass business. I wonder what the going rate might be?

  7. So why did the kid place it in the crack? How did it get stuck there? Hmmmm this boy seems to be a future film script writer

    1. Yeah, that's a good question. Why didn't he stick it next to the sink like everyone else does. I assume that's what everyone else does. (I wouldn't really know as I don't go and see what they're up to in the bathrooms.)

  10. I worked at a school where we had a Guitar as a toilet pass (amongst other absurdities), they still managed to lose it somehow.

Where I work now (which is obviously not a Continuation High), we don't have toilet passes, if a kid asks the answer is "yes" or "not yet" (with a reason for why they need to wait), and seniors don't have to ask, they simply need to tell us where they are going (we can still give a "not yet" response). It is amazing, the kids do not abuse the system, it is treated with absolute respect and I think it has to do with them feeling respected (I have the same conversation daily with 13 year olds "miss, can I go to the toilet", "just give me 5 minutes to finish this explanation" "ok", and they wait, leave and come back promptly, it is amazing!)

    1. That's kind of how it goes there as well. They are much more permissive of restroom passes than they are at the traditional high schools. The only issues come from the kiddos who spend a lot of time out of class. They're termed "floaters" and don't get to leave class except for emergencies.

  11. Is it possible that he kept the pass in a pocket for future "freedom"?

    1. Not likely. He can't just flash a pass to get out of class. He needs teacher permission to leave. (Which most teachers grant without batting an eye.) And it's not feasible for a student to remain on campus but out of class for a full period. (The campus is too small.)

    1. I think it'll be stuck there until they have to replace a fixture or remodel the whole bathroom.
