Window to a Different Time

It's Thursday, so it's time for my weekly random question...

Over a decade ago, I had a lovely little room where I was able to shut myself away and write. It was in the back of the house, and I used to look out the window and watch the comings and goings of the neighbors in their cars.

The room was above the garage, and it had no door to access the outside. The only way to get outside would be to climb out the window. But why would one do that when one could just leave the room and access an outside door.

But the outside door was far enough away that to reach it, one would no longer see out the window. So, if someone was outside and one wanted to go and talk to them, that person could be gone by the time one got there. Which is kind of where this odd thought I had came from...

What if you had a window in your house that looked out into a different time? (It could be different by five minutes or fifty years.)

I thought about this one for a long time. Would I be able to interact with those outside? Could I find a way through that window? If I did, would I be able to get back? Or was I doomed to just watch? And would it be a future I saw or a past?

Starting next week, "what if?" is moving to Tuesdays...

  1. Ah, so you're switching things to "Throwback Thursday".

Five minutes doesn't seem to be much difference, but I'd love something that went by centuries, even millenia. Imagine looking through your window and seeing dinosaurs outside? (I'm not sure I'd want a way to interact with them!)

  2. This is funny because I had a dream years ago where I was with a young man and I was in Leonardo Da Vinci's room with art pieces and rolled up maps and large windows, open. Each window held a different time period where I could enter any window and be in that time period. I went to the medieval times and I was with dwarves and being hunted but I could go back to through the windows. I found this dream amazing and still remember it in detail. I would love to look through a window and see the past or the future. It would be so cool

  3. I think if you couldn't interact with the people on the other side of the window, I would want to put a curtain on that window and avoid looking out of it. I would be tempted to want to warn them of potential dangers, etc. I'm going to have to remember this question and ask hubby, I'm sure he'll have a whole different perspective.

  4. Sounds like a great book to me! Or a Twilight Zone episode...

  5. If you couldn't interact, it would be like watching television. I'd probably cover the window. But if you could interact, it would be a huge responsibility. You might inadvertently change the past or the far future. The dreaded butterfly effect.

  6. If I couldn't interact - then I'd like to look out the window before all the construction and congestion and be able to gaze out into nature...so whenever that was...30 years, probably. If I could interact, then I might like to revisit the wild west...as long as I could shut the window before I was asked to a duel in the town square! And if I could look out to where ever I wanted and not just out my window at a different time - I'd pick a nice ocean/tropical beach or mountain (snow-capped, please) view and not really care about interaction!!! Just a moment here and there of vacation out my window!

  7. I dear...I couldn't find another place to leave this info and didn't want to wait for you to "come across it"...so, I'm leaving you a totally unrelated comment. Feel free to picture me looking out my window to wherever you are right at the moment you read this...but pretend my hair looks better than it does right now :-)...
Anyway, I've nominated you for a VERY INSPIRING BLOGGER award. I have no idea if you do this sort of thing, but I was to pass it on and I just love reading your posts. It's a happy place to come and think or read a good story. Feel free to check out my nom at http://mysweetpeanut.com/2014/07/26/inspiring-who-me/
Keep up the wonderful work! Lisa

I appreciate your comments.

I respond to comments* via email, unless your profile email is not enabled. Then, I'll reply in the comment thread. Eventually. Probably.

*Exception: I do not respond to "what if?" comments, but I do read them all. Those questions are open to your interpretation, and I don't wish to limit your imagination by what I thought the question was supposed to be.
