It's Thursday, so it's time
for my
my weekly random question...
I can't quite figure out how to explain my thought process behind this one, so let me just jump into the question...
What if you had the ability to change one thing about our world/culture/society? What would you change? How would that change impact the rest of the world/culture/society? Would the overall effect be positive or negative?
My contest is still open. Make sure to enter here...

I appreciate your comments.
I respond to comments* via email, unless your profile email is not enabled. Then, I'll reply in the comment thread. Eventually. Probably.
*Exception: I do not respond to "what if?" comments, but I do read them all. Those questions are open to your interpretation, and I don't wish to limit your imagination by what I thought the question was supposed to be.

Whoa--deep question! I'd end all hate. But then everyone might be TOO happy!
ReplyDeleteI'm sure we'd find other problems...
DeleteI'd get rid of hate, too. I certainly don't think we can have enough happy in the world.
ReplyDeleteI think it would be to have people love each other like they love themselves. If they did that, then there wouldn't be half the bad stuff we have here going on. It would definitely have a positive effect I think :)

I'd like to get rid of any one of the following: disrespect, fanaticism, ignorance, cruelty, and greed. Especially greed.
ReplyDeleteAfter reading the above comments, I'd get rid of greed. It seems to be the underlying cause of so many other problems.
ReplyDeleteBetty nailed it!
ReplyDeleteThat is a good answer.
DeleteHmmm my thought immediately went to animals. I would stop all the cruelty, killing and maiming of animals. Human beings are the only animal to be so cruel and for no reason. These animals are often helpless and can't defend themselves. To all the people who abuse dogs, cats etc... and hold dog fights...I would put them in cages and have them fight to the death and see how they would like it. I know that can't happen but jail time certainly would and they could never own an animal again. I would make sure no one could kill Bears or rhinos for their paws or horns because, in other cultures, it is felt that it brings sexual magnetism or some stupid idea like that. Oh please don't get me started!
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure love is the answer because we can't love what we don't know, but I do believe respect could change the world. There is so little respect in contemporary society for others' beliefs, others' cultures, for anyone different than we are—thin, fat, pale, freckled, we label everyone and relegate them to a better than or less than box. If I could make one change it would be to transform our society from one based on power & money to one based on respect.

That is a deep question. I'll give you a deep answer. I'd remove people's inability to see what is morally wrong.
ReplyDeleteI'm not going to pretend that I have given this deep, analytical thought. But my knee-jerk answer is to go back to a time when everything was closed for one day a week. When I was younger, most things were closed on Sundays. I could care less which day you pick and why. I don't want to offend anyone. BUT, I think if we had to stay home or visit friends or read or be in our neighborhoods instead of out shopping or working or go-go-going, it might bring us closer as families and communities. It might make us visit again. And eat as a family. And watch shows together (can I add that to my idea - only one television per house?) It's just a thought. But it feels like it might make a difference. It will never happen - we are too greedy, too needy, too dependent on staying busy or at least pretending we are busy!!! But that's my idea.
ReplyDeleteThat's an interesting answer. I don't think I'd like having everything closed one day a week, but the reasoning behind it I like.
