New Weather Expense

What if? It's the basis of many stories. We ask. We ponder. We wonder.

On Tuesdays I throw one out there. What if? It may be speculative. It may stem from something I see. It may be something I pull from the news.

Make of it what you will. If a for instance is not specified, interpret that instance as you wish. And if the idea turns into a story, I'd appreciate a thank you in the acknowledgements 😉

Yes, a "what if?". But still a rant.

What if you had to pay to get a weather forecast?

Sadly, this may happen. It's in Project 2025 to disband NOAA, and that includes the National Weather Service. They want to privatize it, which means that people would have to pay to access their findings. What happens to our weather apps then?

  1. I think most of us would pay a reasonable fee. But weather is always news, so I doubt we’d have to pay …

  2. I wonder how much this would impact The Weather Channel. And it would impact farmers and others who...well, never mind.

  3. I wouldn't pay. I don't know where weather apps, like Apple, get their weather forecasts, so maybe they would stop them. Or, there must be a lot of sources used beyond the National Weather Service. Maybe not. I have no idea. A lot of people DO rely on weather forecasts, but they shouldn't have to pay for them. What a strange thing to defund. Along with so many other strange things. It's weird and worrisome.

  4. I do follow our local weather, especially for possible freezes. They don't happen often, but I have plants I need to cover if they do. I can't imagine there won't be workaround to get free weather info?

  5. You really believe in Project 2025? Maybe I'm wrong but it seems mostly a joke. On a funny note, our local wildlife seem to predict major weather events better than any human resource. Be well!

I appreciate your comments.

I respond to comments* via email, unless your profile email is not enabled. Then, I'll reply in the comment thread. Eventually. Probably.

*Exception: I do not respond to "what if?" comments, but I do read them all. Those questions are open to your interpretation, and I don't wish to limit your imagination by what I thought the question was supposed to be.
