False Surroundings

It's Tuesday, so it's time for my weekly random question...

I saw this article last week in io9 about a real brain condition that makes people think they've woken up in a duplicate world. And I thought it was perfect for my question of the week.

What if you did wake up in an alternate world? What would you do?

  1. there is an infinite amount of alternate worlds:) I read (and saw a ST-NG episode) that for every choice you make, there is an alternate universe making the other choice. In some I am certain i would be dead. In others' I would be wanting to get back to this world...actually I would want to always get back to this world, because, despite unhappy moments and moments of frustration, I like my world now-aches and all:) That is unless i am married to George Clooney and living in Italy:)

  2. Just try to figure stuff out. Have fun. It might depend a little on how different it was. If it's pretty much the same as here, I'd probably get bored.

  3. I hope I'm skinnier in an alternative world. I think I would have to see what is going on and if I'm in the same job, same house, same lifestyle and then try to get used to my new normal.

  4. Your questions always sound like they'd make great books! The twist at the end of the book could be that the person has that brain condition. Demi Moore starred in a movie back in the 90s where she lived half of the time as one woman and half of the time as another...I think she was in a big city in the U.S. and a European city like Paris? Can't remember the specifics. But she couldn't figure out which was the dream and which was the reality.

    1. That's the idea behind these posts--to generate story ideas.

I did see that Demi Moore movie. It was called Passion of Mind. (I just looked it up on imdb.com.)

  5. I agree with Stephanie. That would make a great book. I've been looking for an idea... hmmm. I think I wake up to a different reality everyday in some sense!

  6. Not surprisingly, I immediately went to mom's Alzheimer's world. She just finished telling me a story that was physically impossible, but so real to her. She was looking at Sophie, our dog, who is sitting on her right and talking about her left side feeling "tickly" and then laughing and explaining that it was because Sophie wagged her tail (which is at the far other end of the couch) and it tickled her left side. She could see with her eyes and touch with her hands that there is no way that is what happened, but she is convinced. I don't want to live there.
My alternate universe - if it's a set - needs to be set-like (translate that to mean everything in it's place...very tidy...and Martha Stewart clean...with little or no effort from me...and organized - the stuff of Pinterest organized...) and like Betty above - I am skinnier...like that woman on the Chico's ad...my age, but crazy fit and cute in my set-like-alternate-universe Chico's outfits - gobs of bracelets that don't annoy me or make too much noise and cute shoes that never hurt my feet - probably because in my set-like-alternate-universe I am floating above the ground or seated on my perfect sofa surrounded by just the right number of throw pillows that no teenager has stuffed into a wad to play video games on the floor! There would be twinkly lights too...Nigella Lawson (without the drugs) twinkly lights. I think I went the wrong way with this one...but I was very happy there for a minute!

    1. I did not think of this from an Alzheimer perspective. But that gives it a whole new layer.

  7. This reminded me of Pretty Little Mistakes: A Do-Over Novel by Heather McElhatton.

I appreciate your comments.

I respond to comments* via email, unless your profile email is not enabled. Then, I'll reply in the comment thread. Eventually. Probably.

*Exception: I do not respond to "what if?" comments, but I do read them all. Those questions are open to your interpretation, and I don't wish to limit your imagination by what I thought the question was supposed to be.
