The High Cost of U.S. Healthcare

What if? It's the basis of many stories. We ask. We ponder. We wonder.

On Tuesdays I throw one out there. What if? It may be speculative. It may stem from something I see. It may be something I pull from the news.

Make of it what you will. If a for instance is not specified, interpret that instance as you wish. And if the idea turns into a story, I'd appreciate a thank you in the acknowledgements 😉

So, um...

Excerpt from this article.

Last week there was a big story in the news that you may have heard about. United Healthcare's CEO was shot and killed. And, considering the country in which I live, my question is about an outcome of this whole thing...

What if healthcare companies hire security to protect their executives? What if they pass that expense on to their customers?

  2. I've had to go throught appeal process with insurance making sure a family member was covered. It's stressful and shouldn't happen as often as it does. I'm sure plenty of people don't even know they can appeal, it's terrible.

  3. I am sure they just started doing that. If this administration improves the cost of healthcare (which I doubt), I am all for it.

    1. He doesn’t have a plan. He has “a concept of a plan” he’s been “working on” since 2016.

There are two historic reasons why the US does not have universal healthcare.

      (1) A wage freeze starting in 1942 forced employers to find other means of recruiting and retaining workers. Building on the recently mandated workers' compensation plans, employers or their union counterparts started offering insurance to cover hospital and doctor visits.

      (2) post WW II, when every civilized country was developing universal healthcare, the racist Southern Dixiecrats refused it because it meant integrating hospitals.

  4. As of now it wouldn't surprise me if they hired someone to look out for the top people after something like this happens. I don't know if they would try to pass the buck to us though.

  5. Our system is so broken (I am now finding this out firsthand with a close family member) but to answer your immediate question, yes, they are going to hire more security and yes, we will pay for it. I also doubt the public discussions following the assassination are going to do any good. I don't have a solution in my mind.

  6. For all we know, they do a lot of that already. Customers might not get a large increase in premiums since there are so many of them. I don't think security would stop a shooter on the street. I doubt they would see it coming.

  7. In the end customers pay for everything. Amen.

I appreciate your comments.

I respond to comments* via email, unless your profile email is not enabled. Then, I'll reply in the comment thread. Eventually. Probably.

*Exception: I do not respond to "what if?" comments, but I do read them all. Those questions are open to your interpretation, and I don't wish to limit your imagination by what I thought the question was supposed to be.
