Spaceship Earth

It's Thursday, so it's time for my my weekly random question...

Through the Wormhole is returning in a couple weeks, and to gear up for the new season, the Science Channel is rerunning previous episodes as they tease the new ones. (Looks like one episode is going to be about the zombie apocalypse.)

Anyway, I'm not sure which episode was on in the background when this thought occurred...

What if the Earth (and the entire solar system for that matter) is just one giant spaceship taking humanity... someplace...?

  1. well, let's enjoy the ride:) You never know if some big eyes are watching us. I might as well be still completely ignorant and keep enjoying my life:)

  2. Great thought! Where are we going, though?

  3. It kind of is, isn't it? It's traveling around the sun, which is traveling around the galaxy, which is traveling around the universe at millions of miles an hour (or something, I don't feel like looking it up right now :).

But it would be cool to know where we'll end up.

  4. Kind of it is already, right? Even though we just circle the sun we are moving around the Milky Way and the universe is expanding, too. That's not what you meant, but it's what it made me think, and then what I thought is: what if we are expanding because the UNIVERSE is flat, it's like a fountain, and we were burbled up out of the middle, and now we're on the flat part of it heading to the edge where...

Otherworldly creatures wait, skimming their appendages through the water hoping to catch the prizes spilling out from the fountain? At a party, for one of the rich otherworlders, where the kids are all gathered around this enormous treat, one kid off to the side, silent, not really welcome at the party, his parents made him be invited, and he wants to go home, but out of the corner of his eye, he sees the Earth, gleaming with bright lights on the night side of the planet, about to tip over the edge, and so he waits, hand outstretched, but quietly, because he doesn't want one of the others to get this. Catching the Earth, he cuddles it quietly between his hands and slips away to a quiet corner of the room, studying the world he now rules...

    1. Yes, our whole solar system and galaxy are hurtling through space at quite a clip. I did not see your story coming. I like it.

  5. I wonder where we're going and who's taking us there?

  6. Oh, I think that would be fun! I wonder though how long the journey will be and why we haven't gotten there yet.

  7. Fine with me, Liz. Let them, whoever they are, take us for a ride. Hope it's nice where we're going.

  8. So we are all on one big ship? I'd want to know who is at the helm. Plus, life is a journey....why not?

    1. Gravity. Gravity is at the helm. And some propulsion from the Big Bang.
