Cure for Sub Boredom

Culinary arts. Friday. Sixth period.

Yes, that's cooking. Yes, home ec is still around, although they don't do sewing anymore. I think it's considered a CTE class, that is career and technical education.

The assignment was a cooking video and then they had questions to answer.

The video:

They had the video in their Google Classroom as well as the questions. I played the video on the big TV, but I wasn't too concerned when they ignored it as I could hear it playing from some of their computers.

I walked the room to talk to a student about something, I forget what. Then another student said something, and I offered my help. I said what I always say.

"I have nothing else to do, so please, if you need some help, let me know."

The student?

"You can stream a TV show from your computer," and as she said it, she motioned towards the teacher's desk as if to say I should go there and not bother them.

Yikes. That was dismissive.

But, teenagers.

And seriously, they didn't need my help. I was being way too much. Which is part of the fun of subbing with teenagers. It is so much fun to be way too much when they are doing their sullen teenage thing.

I got my revenge. I took a picture of their cell phone storage which wasn't holding many of their cell phones. And I sent it to their teacher. Bwa-ha-ha!

  1. I'm surprised home ec is still around. It seems like so many non-academic classes have disappeared over the years. When I was in junior high (dark ages) they had wood shop, metal shop, and a few others. All the high schools had auto shop.

  3. Home Ec! I never got to take it, since I was in 4H . What a great idea, to take pics of them using their phones!

    1. Not of them using their phones, but of the phone storage unit that did not contain all of their phones.

    1. Oh yes. I've been telling other subs of this too, and one even threatened the kiddos with it. You should have seen how fast they gave up their phones.

  6. Education is so different these days from when I was growing up! And I'm sure it has changed a lot in the years that you've been teaching, too.

    1. Oh yes. It used to be that we'd always have to show videos. I love that they can watch them on their own. Much easier for classroom control.

    1. I thought it was funny. Just go away and don't bother us? Yeah, not happening. If the class had been more of an issue, I totally would have stood over her all period.

  9. Teenagers are masters at sullen. I should know. I had two of them once.

  10. Thanks for visiting my blog during IWSG…sorry it took me so long to reciprocate. Doozy of a week.

I always enjoy your subbing stories, and that blunt directness made me laugh, remembering some of my own interactions with teenagers in the classroom. They really don't pull any punches, do they?

    1. It's my latest gambit. I haven't had to do it since then, but it's only been a week.

  12. I love how you handled this one! “I have nothing else to do, so please let me know” is such a charming way to offer help, and a student waving you towards the teacher’s desk only makes the story better. Your revenge was brilliant too: calmly photographing the phone storage and sending it to the teacher is exactly the kind of quick thinking that keeps a classroom running. You make subbing sound like fun, which is a real talent.
