What if? It's the basis of many stories. We ask. We ponder. We wonder.
On Tuesdays I throw one out there. What if? It may be speculative. It may stem from something I see. It may be something I pull from the news.
Make of it what you will. If a for instance is not specified, interpret that instance as you wish. And if the idea turns into a story, I'd appreciate a thank you in the acknowledgements 😉
I've been pondering the French Revolution and the Reign of Terror. *waves hands* No reason, really. But it got me thinking...
What if those in power in government (say, like in the Supreme Court or the Oval Office) actually suffered consequences when they did something illegal?
In theory they’re already subject to consequences. Reality, however …
ReplyDeleteThose in power rarely suffer consequences to illegal actions because they have the money to get out of having to pay for what they did. Only those without money and power have to pay for their actions which is wrong. It would be great if those who think they can do whatever they want would have to pay for their actions but I don't see that ever happening.
ReplyDeleteIt's, sadly, been the same all through history. Money talks. Knowing the right people makes a difference. Justice tends to land hard on those without money or power, and soft (or not at all) and those with money and/or power. What would happen if there actually were consequences? A better world.
ReplyDeleteHopefully they would learn from other's consequences and think twice, or not repeat their own actions. Then, maybe the next in line would know not to try anything. Wouldn't that be nice? Nixon at least admitted some of his judgements were wrong, and had the class (for want of a better word I guess) to resign.
ReplyDeletePolitical power is the ultimate guard against all consequences. Impervious.
ReplyDeleteMoney. If you have the money you've got the clean record. It sucks but it's true. Money can buy you everything moral values, being a decent human being, etc., etc.
