Something Missing

What if? It's the basis of many stories. We ask. We ponder. We wonder.

On Tuesdays I throw one out there. What if? It may be speculative. It may stem from something I see. It may be something I pull from the news.

Make of it what you will. If a for instance is not specified, interpret that instance as you wish. And if the idea turns into a story, I'd appreciate a thank you in the acknowledgements 😉

I spent the weekend at my uncle's. I'm out of ideas, so I asked him to give us a question...

What if a void suddenly appeared where one wasn't before?

  1. I've had that happen. Or, at least the feeling of not seeing something I knew was there before, but not quite remembering what I wasn't seeing. I think, or say aloud if I'm with someone, "Something is missing." Wherever this is just looks different. A tree may been cut down, one I drove by for years and didn't really pay attention, but the lack of it there is noted somewhere in my brain. That's the sort of "void" I see, or don't, as the case may be!

  2. Too many Star Trek episodes about traveling through the void has really scared me …

  3. Years ago we lived in Northwest Arkansas, before its rapid growth due to Wal-Mart really got going. We returned 27 years later. There were lots of voids - buildings gone, wooded areas gone, long standing businesses gone, plus all the new highways, businesses, and more. It almost made me dizzy (literally) the night we arrived.

  4. What a thought-provoking question! A sudden void appearing where one didn't exist before opens up so many intriguing possibilities. It could represent a literal hole in reality, pulling in everything around it, or perhaps it symbolizes an emotional void in someone’s life—like the sudden absence of a loved one or a lost opportunity.

Imagine if this void had a physical presence: people might flock to it, drawn by curiosity and fear, trying to understand its origin and purpose. Some might see it as a chance to escape, while others would feel the weight of what was lost.

Alternatively, if we look at it from a more abstract perspective, what if this void represents an empty space in our lives that we often overlook? Maybe it’s a reminder to reflect on what we truly value or what’s missing from our daily routines.

It’s fascinating how a simple “what if” can lead to so many interpretations and stories. Thanks for sparking this reflection! I can’t wait to see where it leads you.

  5. This is Birgit….if a void showed up, I would make a wide walk around it to make sure I don’t enter it.

  6. Seems like an oxymoron that a "void appears". Can you see an emptiness, a lack? I think of a tear, in space and time, although time to me still seems more like a descriptive term and not a phenom. Linear. Descriptive of change along a scale. We are always seeing movies about multi universes existing simultaneously in multiple dimensions. Would I step into another universe and exchange places with an alternate me? For a week maybe? Probably not. I'd worry about my cats here in this universe and if the exchanged me would keep their litter boxes clean. There's a void in my brain right now, a dullness, that tells another part of my brain "go to bed" so off I go. I have no void answers tonight. I will void the question and go to sleep.

I appreciate your comments.

I respond to comments* via email, unless your profile email is not enabled. Then, I'll reply in the comment thread. Eventually. Probably.

*Exception: I do not respond to "what if?" comments, but I do read them all. Those questions are open to your interpretation, and I don't wish to limit your imagination by what I thought the question was supposed to be.
