The other day I had an exchange with someone who actually still supports the regime. (When I expressed my views, she didn't trust my facts because I follow "the fake news". Deep sigh.) I said something about the fact that we now have concentration camps and those in charge are committing atrocities.
Her response? It's not actually that bad.
Um...
And so, a few days later I had this thought. What if there was a website somewhere keeping a tally? Of those who have died as a direct result of this regime?
How many have died in ICE custody? (Like this guy.) How many have died as a result of the gutting of USAID? How many have died of measles? How many have died in the attacks on other countries? How many have been openly just killed?
I'm sure this number is way higher than people think.
I do not know how to even begin to compile such stats. And I do not have the skills to create the website (although that part I could probably figure out).
But I think it's something we need. A tally. That is updated regularly. Supported by facts.
Some still won't believe it, but we somehow need to bear witness. Keep track.
I hope for a reckoning someday. Until then, I want a list of everything. So we don't forget.
(After I wrote all this, I stumbled upon an article that basically says the killing of people is a feature, not a bug: Our nation is quickly being destroyed by “necropolitics.")

It's sad so many refuse to accept facts. factually.co has some interesting statistics on various issues. I like that they admit they can make mistakes and verify information and news. One thing I've been hearing is how many died in ICE detainment under Obama, failing to take into account that was 8 years total, and the numbers don't mention the causes. Deaths aren't the same as "killed by." The site is kind of fun to just browse too, it's not just politics.
ReplyDeleteI'll have to check it out. Yeah, incarceration is dangerous all the time. People can be cruel to those they are guarding. Sadly.
DeleteSigh. I will keep trying to spread kindness as an oposition.
ReplyDeleteAnd all the teenage girls being held in detention, shipped to TX so they can't have an abortion. Some are victims of rape. I like the idea of a tally on it all - during Republican President and Democrat. We all need the truth.
ReplyDeleteIt is information that should always be public.
DeleteFantastic idea. I don't know of any such site offhand, and, as you said, the true number may never be known. We need some sub tallies, too because some horrors won't be fully known until down the line. How about "raped girls forced to give birth who suffer permanent health issues" or "people detained in the middle of their cancer treatment and cancer advances during imprisonment to where person ends up terminally ill"? I've heard of at least one case of the latter, as reported by reputable media. History will pass its judgement but the suffering won't go away.
ReplyDeleteI think I linked to that article about the man whose cancer progressed so far he's now on hospice above. I just saw it after I wrote the post, but before I posted it.
DeleteMy modus operandi is to respect others. My BIGGER modus operandi is to be a silly little hobbit. As I'm sure you've noticed I'm a bit more serious on my other blog. But, that STILL doesn't mean I can disrespect people.
ReplyDeleteWe should all respect others. The world works so much better when we treat each other with respect and kindness.
DeleteI am CONVINCED that we treat each very differently than when we have the anonymity of social media.
DeleteI know people who thinks there news source is truthfully, and those who has opposite view is fake.
ReplyDeleteTalking about resisters. After I get done reading my current book. I think I'll get Paper Bullets, by Jeffery Jackson.
We used to argue about ideas, now we argue about facts
