Eliminating Blogger's Indent

You've noticed it, right? In Blogger blogs, the first line of the first paragraph starts a space over.

It's a minor thing, but it bugs me. Why does it do that? How can I fix it?

I don't have an answer to the first question. Not the "why?" anyway. But I do know how it's happening.

If you open a new blank blog post, you're greeted by a blank template. Before you do anything, switch from "Compose view" to "HTML view".

And you'll notice there's already some code on your page:

blank HTML view of Blogger post with code <p>&nbsp;</p>
click on the image to make it bigger

It's basically gibberish. It's just some placeholders in between code that means "paragraph". If you look in your toolbar, it'll show "Paragraph" rather than "Normal". "Paragraph" means when you hit the "Enter" key on your keyboard, a gap of a whole line is left after your previous paragraph.

(If you want to use "Normal", that line isn't left, and you have to hit "Enter" again to get that space.)

If you try to delete that code, in Compose view it'll go back to "Normal". If you hit the back button to delete that space in Compose view, things go wonky.

So, most bloggers just leave the space in. But you don't have to.

The way to get rid of the space is to begin the post. If you start with writing, start writing. When you hit "Enter" to get a new paragraph, begin writing the new paragraph.

Only after you have started a second paragraph can you go back to your first word and hit "Backspace" to eliminate that space.

Yes, I know. It's an annoying extra step. But it's the only thing I've found that works.

But what if you start with an image?

If you upload an image using the picture icon in the toolbar, an extra line of space is added to the top of your blog post.

I have not had luck in hitting backspace before the image to make the extra line go away. (If you have, please leave how you get it to work in the comments.) But I can make that extra space disappear by deleting the first paragraph code (in "HTML view") after I've uploaded the image.

lots of code with <p>&nbsp;</p> highlighted in gray with an orange arrow pointing to it

If you delete everything highlighted in gray, that space goes away. Be very careful to get both "p"s and the carrots on either side.

When you go back to "Compose view", your post will be back in "Normal". But if you click on the arrow, you can switch it back to "Paragraph", and it'll stick.

Of course, if you haven't noticed this issue and it doesn't bother you, feel free to ignore this post. But things like that irritate me, so I take the time to make sure I don't have that space.

What about you? Do you eliminate the space? Have you never noticed? Or are you on a different blogging platform and don't have the problem? (Or do you know a better way to fix this?)

  1. Interesting. I hadn't noticed. I don't think mine does that, but it could just be I've been around so long that the old ways are cemented into my formatting?

    1. I just wish there was a way to keep it from happening at all.

  3. I always post in html mode so I haven't noticed the indent.

    1. That eliminates the issue, too. This was more about those of us who aren't that programming savvy.

  4. I have never noticed. I am bad to understand how to fix things which you see on my own blog but, one day, I'll get to it

    1. Your blog posts are fine. If you don't notice this and it doesn't bother you, no worries. It's probably better. I'm just one of those who notices these sorts of things.

  5. It bugs the absolute crap out of me! I can always manage to delete that indent ~ in fact, many of my posts are composed in “normal” because they’re poetry. But my images are inconsistently spaced and now I understand why. Thank you!!

Obviously I will now fix every one of my posts, as soon as I get the chance. This is only since April 1, when I began using images 😀

  6. I have noticed, and I never knew why, so now I do. To me it's a minor annoyance. I use the backspace trick. I don't think I've ever started a post with an image but if I do, hopefully I'll remember the code for resolving that issue because that issue would annoy me more.

    1. Yes, absolutely a minor thing. (I'm grasping for stuff to post about here.)

  8. It's not something I have ever noticed as I usually center my post texts. I just went and tested it out, and yes, there's that first line in one! I DO notice the extra line when starting with a photo. Usually. I just tried and it didn't do it. I often have Blogger do things randomly. Change text size. Change alignment. Mess up photo centering. Still, better for me than the other options for blogs.

    1. Yeah, you wouldn't notice it if you center things. I don't know why Blogger does weird formatting things with your photos. I hope you figure it out.

  9. Very good post, Liz. Though I have noticed this, especially when I place a photo right at the beginning, I haven't bothered because I usually compose my blog posts on Google Doc and then copy-paste it on Notepad (to remove the formatting), and then cut-and-paste it in Blogger.
Just a habit. I never used to compose directly on Blogger because the earlier versions were not this user-friendly.

  10. This is a test to see if I have solved the issue of posting without being anonymous and without having to add myself every time x3 (as an aside, Blogger wasn't doing that indent when I was using it - I'm glad because it would drive me mental as well!) ~ Anita

    1. So, not the cookies then. Hmmm... If I think of anything else, I'll let you know. I don't know what's causing it. Sorry.

  11. Wild! I can't say I had noticed, but now I totally see it. Blogger gets weirder and quirkier all the time. @samanthabwriter from
