Setting Up the Comments

So, um, I'm starting to run out of ideas. But, I've only got a couple more weeks until school starts back up. If anyone has any good ideas on a how-to-in-Blogger post, let me know in the comments.

(Frédérique at Quilting Patchwork Appliqué did a couple posts on blogging things as well. First: How to create a custom "Back to Top" button in Blogger, with a reading progress indicator. And then: How to add a visual box such as a display box or horizontal scroll code to a blog post, with a "copy" button. Both are new to me and very cool. I thought you might enjoy them as well.)

Comments. In Blogger, they can be glitchy. So, we each chose our comment boxes based on that which we felt worked the best for each of us.

(About a month ago I did a post on how to respond to comments via email. This can work with your commenting box choices if you wish.)

To adjust your comments settings, go to "Settings":

Then scroll down to "Comments":

You can click on any of these. Let's start with "Comment location". As you can see, I have it set to "Embedded". There are other choices:

I like "Embedded" because it has that little "Reply" option. So you can directly reply to any individual comment. Alas, some people have trouble with Blogger recognizing them. When they go to comment:

(Using the arrow key next to the "Comment as:") they can't select their name. I don't know why this is. I know I sometimes (when I'm using a different computer, like at school) have to log in using my Google account. Or I'm logged in, but I have to tell the thing to use my account. But for some, they can't get this to work.

(I don't know if it's a cookies thing--like they need to clear their cookies, or if they have to turn something on or off. When I use "Incognito Mode", there was a toggle I turned off, and then suddenly I could log in and stay logged in. All I know is it won't work for some people.)

Because of this issue, many bloggers use "Popup window" instead. When you go to comment:

You get a popup:

Which, now that I'm doing this, I see it has a little orange "Reply". So, popup windows do reply now? Wow.

The reason I hadn't gone to the popup window (besides the annoyance of having to scroll through a second screen to get to the place where you comment) was because you couldn't reply directly to people. But if you can...

Although, it is a second step. Whichever works best for you is the way to go. (If you do the popup window, let me know if it has glitches, too.)

Then we've got "Who can comment?":

I have "Anyone" selected. Because of the glitches with some people not able to log in. You can limit it to people with Google accounts as well. "Only members of this blog" only works if you have a closed group of subscribers. Otherwise, you're limiting your reach. (I can think of reasons why someone would want a closed blog, but I doubt that's for many of us here.)

"Anyone" includes anonymous commenters. And some of you might not want to allow anonymous commenters. Spammers use anonymous, although some spammers have accounts they use as well. I don't have a big spam problem, mostly because I get all my comments emailed to me, so any spam gets deleted from the blog within a day. Depending on your reach and how much time you have to moderate your comments, you might want to exclude anonymous. That's when you select "Users with Google Accounts".

Then, finally, did you know you can write your own "Comment form message"?

If you click on the message, it'll take you to a form where you can write your own. You can use basic HTML for line breaks, bold, italics, and such.

Most of us set up our comments and have since forgotten about it. And that's fine. Whatever works. But, if you've been wondering about changing things, you can always do that. If you hate it, you can always go back to what you had before.

Have you considered changing your comments? Do you have any other blogging topic ideas for me?

  1. Good tips. I left blogger a while ago because my husband bought me my own domain for my birthday one year, so I went all in with a self-install of WordPress.

Unfortunately, I don't have any blogging ideas. But my son goes to middle school orientation today, so yeah, school is coming...

    1. I know WordPress is different. Is it easier? Like with anything, blogging platform is a personal choice, and we go with what works for us.

  2. I haven't changed comments, I've only had a few spammers & one really weird comment I immediately deleted.

    1. Most of us set it up and forgot about it. Which is how the comments should work, really.

  3. well look at you Ms. Technology! Love it while you can...lol....I used to be like that, well, maybe not! I knew a lot of short cuts and ins and outs. But I do good to remember that crap now! There are some days that I feel dummier than a box of rocks. Seems I can't even read directions on making candy correctly anymore. HAHA..Anyway, going to talk to doc about all that, alzheimers runs in the family but I really think mine is my gabapentin. I have to have it to keep pain level down but its got some yucky side effects. Need to see if flipping over from that to magnesium might be better. Course, that will require blood work to see where my mag. levels are. That will end up being a post on my blog...lol....As for running out of things to blog about, just pick some random! lol...go back on my blog and see all the random things I pull out of space to blog about! My life, my health, things I saw on FB then I look them up and read about them, things I see daily......JUST DO A RANDOM post.

    1. I can't do random. It's not how my brain works. I tried random at the beginning, and it was hit or miss. I would have stopped blogging years and years ago.

So, I have my routine, and it makes it easier to find things to talk about. But yeah, I'm running out of "talking about blogging" ideas.

But, school starts back up in a week and a half. Depending upon how quickly I get back to work, I'll soon have things to talk about.

  4. Nice. I periodically review my comments settings, but I think I hit a good configuration years ago.

New school year... You and me, both. Wishing each of us sanity. Meanwhile, I have too little brainpower to throw ideas your way, but I'll send this magical virtual cheese to prompt you. =D

  5. It's been a looooooooong time since I've blogged on Blogger. My current blog comments are set up so they have to be approved before they're visible, just because I get mostly spam comments.

Have you done a post about setting up the "get new posts in your email" thing?

  6. I like my popup box but I did set comments to be moderated after one week. Catches a lot of spam that way.

    1. You have a lot more traffic than I do. I imagine you get way more spam than I do as well.

  7. I get a lot of spam and thankfully the spam filter catches most of it. So I don't allow anonymous comments. I don't change a lot on my blog.

  8. I don’t moderate comments. I don’t get a lot of spam so I’m not overly concerned

    1. I'm similar. We've all kind of figured out what works for us.

  9. "Anyone" is fair because not everyone is connected to blogger. Although most people do have a Google account. (My husband has one and he has no idea when he made it. LOL)

  10. I don't moderate comments ahead of time, but I do check in every few days and delete any spam that wormed its way in. @samanthabwriter from

  11. I have my comments set to anyone, but I get an email and have to okay them before they post. I am always anonymous on my phone, and have to approve my own comments or replies, so I rarely use my phone for blog business. Some of the regular reader comments still end up in the spam folder and I never get an email about them.
WordPress is difficult for me. I tried making a blog, but it's not as easy as Blogger. I deleted it. So, now I can't make comments on WordPress blogs without being anonymous and add a note of who I am (I guess the bloggers have the setting that way), since WordPress won't let me use my email address as it was used for WordPress and they want me to sign in. But, I can't the account is deleted, and they won't let me use my email address again!

    1. Ah, a Catch-22. That sucks. I made a WordPress account just to comment on WordPress blogs, but I never tried to make a blog, so it works fine. We all found our own ways of managing the various glitches.

  12. My comments are set to anyone because some of my readers have WordPress blogs, but I do moderate. Perhaps some of your readers would be interested in sharing buttons other than the ones that come with Blogger

  13. I wasn't aware of all these when I started using Blogger and so left the default settings as they are. Later, I learnt to use some of the settings like moderating comments and restricting anonymous comments. I too prefer the embedded comment section to the pop-up one.

  14. I didn't realize that I can reply with the popup window. Thanks for the tlp. I had to switch to the popup window because too many people were having trouble commenting the other way.

  15. I tried flowing g what you wrote but..hopeless.

  16. Several people have told me that they couldn't leave comments, so I've left the settings as open as possible. And I get very little spam, so that's fine.
    Thanks for mentioning my posts!

I appreciate your comments.

I respond to comments* via email, unless your profile email is not enabled. Then, I'll reply in the comment thread. Eventually. Probably.

*Exception: I do not respond to "what if?" comments, but I do read them all. Those questions are open to your interpretation, and I don't wish to limit your imagination by what I thought the question was supposed to be.
