Duck, Duck, Goose

Duck.

Duck.

GOOSE!

I don't normally post on Saturdays, (and I'm normally not online on Saturdays), but for the A to Z Challenge I check in with a quick picture. So, while planning for D, I thought "duck", because we have dozens of ducks that live in the complex.

So, I went to take pictures of said ducks last Friday only to find that all the ducks had disappeared. Poof. Gone.

Considering the timing, I suspect that they're nesting someplace, and in the next week or so, there'll be way more ducks because they'll have ducklings.

On Sunday while walking the dog, I found a few ducks out and about. Phew. Notice, males. And the pictures aren't great. Usually the fowl creatures are underfoot, but not then. But that's good enough for me.

Do you see ducks near where you live? Got any critters that are just always underfoot?

Today's A to Z Challenge post brought to you by the letter...

  1. We have ducks at the pond in the large park to the south of us. I see ducks in the 2 nature preserves where I do some easy hiking.
Critters in our yard? under the deck: a pair of rabbits. Getting ready to birth those bunnies! the poop is EVERYWHERE!!

    Enjoyed your photos!

    1. Oh yes, the poop is everywhere. Big downside, that.

  2. I'm right on the ocean, so I see lots of ducks, geese and seagulls. My C post was on Laughing Gulls..."Cachinnating Gulls on the Chabble". Yeah, those ducks may be nesting where you are. We're a bit chilly still.

    2. Yeah, we had some record-breaking heat. Winter is very much in our rearview.

  3. We have ducks here in the fountain pools at our condo complex, but when the big honking Canadian geese show up each year, they chase the ducks away 🙁

  4. I see lots of ducks and geese on the lake in Eisenhower Park, and I see geese and seagulls and sometimes swans at Wantagh Park.

  5. We sometimes see ducks where we live but not close enough to photograph. Now Canadian geese, they are a plague. Strangely, though, so far I'm not seeing as many as usual.

    1. We had a year where there were seven Canadian geese. This year I've only seen three. Or five? I know what you mean.

  6. I don't see ducks, but the Canada geese are around most of the year. Some fly over migrating, but the resident ones stick around.

    1. I'm sorry. Our Canadian geese migrate. They leave midsummer and return in January.

  7. Fun post! 🦆
Glad the ducks showed up again.
Nesting season sounds exciting, and ducklings will be adorable. We live in a condo, so no ducks underfoot here… just lots of pesky pigeons that think they own the place!

    1. I used to enjoy ducks. Then, midsummer when it's 70F at night so I have the window open, the ducks quack so freakin loud at 2 AM it wakes me. I enjoy them less now.

  10. We built a large pond in our backyard years ago and were thrilled when a duck couple landed and hung out for a season. Even more thrilled when we saw a couple baby ducks!

  11. We have ducks and geese too. I love when traffic comes to a halt to let them slowly waddle across the road.

  12. I love ducks and Canada geese. I'd be honored if a pair would come to my yard, but I have cats, sooooo....My chihuahua is always underfoot: we always have to look down before taking a step :-)

    1. Canadian geese (*cough*Cobra chickens*cough*) are not fun up close. They're very rude and would likely attack your chihuahua. (They go after Buttercup if we get near enough on her walks.)

  13. We have ducks and geese here in Montreal as well! Canada geese are large and beautiful. Your photos are gorgeous, Liz!
    I love birds and animals...nature! :)

    1. They're lovely to look at, but up close Canadian geese are vicious. One bit me a couple weeks back. (And all I was doing was walking by. Carrying the dog. So it wouldn't attack the dog. Attacked me instead.)

  14. There's one park close by that has ducks here.

  15. The Canada Geese are everywhere and tie traffic up on a fairly regular basis.

  16. This time of year drivers must be wary of both squirrels and Canada geese. While the former wouldn't harm your vehicle like those heavy birds, it makes me sad to see one squished on the road. Be well!

    1. Roadkill always makes me sad, no matter the critter.

    2. Plus it's against the law here (probably many other places) to run Canada Geese over. As it should be. In my experience, if you go very, very slowly, they'll get out of your way.

  17. We have both Canada Geese and Dusky's here, who look a lot like regular Canada Geese but are an official subspecies.

    1. Never heard of Dusky's before. Learn something new every day.

  18. I my apartment is on a lake and we have lots of ducks and geese and a nesting pair of swans. The have a pecking order that only Mother Nature understands.

    1. Are the swans vicious? I've heard swans can be vicious.

  19. I see a few ducks. Lots of geese. The new warehouses are built over their old habitat 🙁 so they're always in the road or divebombing off roofs.

  21. For a moment, when I saw the heading, I was reminded of the web browser company, "DuckDuckGo!!!
Not very often I get to seem ducks here. If I need to see them, I have to go to some of the small lakes which have them. They aren't close to where I live.

  22. The bird "underfoot" here is grackles, like blacken the sky level sometimes. But not in my backyard thanks to a feral cat that lives there - the cat changes color every two to three years, but I never see grackles, only their feathers.

  23. No ducks. Plenty of geese. And my favorite a white heron.

  24. We have ducks and geese near the house - there's a stream and some flood plains that have them in. Swans too.
I live near a place called Slimbridge though - it's a wetland with lots of different birds. I love going there to feed the birds, and we feed Jackdaws and the family of magpies that live in the tree diagonally opposite our house (though, some of that is to apologise for my absolutely silly cat who thought she'd go investigate and got dive bombed by the birds. They now yell when they see her, and she doesn't go near them, and use a different tone when they see me - they know I feed them.
