This week I want to talk about the voter suppression act making it's way through the Senate. The so-called SAVE Act will make it harder to register to vote. By disenfranchising voters, the regime hopes to stay in power.
Your job is to contact your senators and urge them to vote no.
Are you a married woman? You're going to have to jump through hoops to register to vote. Your marriage certificate is not an accepted form of ID, and since your name is different than the name on your birth certificate, you'll have to get other proof you are who you say you are.
(Did anyone jump through those hoops to get a Real ID? I heard it was a pain in the rear. Same issue.)
Anyway, here's the actual bill. And here's some more info via the League of Women Voters.
I read the “SAVE Act” (the GOP’s new voter suppression bill) so you don’t have to. This is my one page summary. Jesus it’s bad. 1/

In case you can't see that Bluesky post, here's a link to it, and also so you can view the whole thread.
After calling your senators, check out the Adopt a Day Labor Corner. There's also a virtual webinar about it on February 18th.
And, finally, there's one more video following up last week's follow up (and here's that direct link as I know some of you can't see the video here):

Thank you for sharing this important information, Liz.
ReplyDeleteUgh!
ReplyDeleteConstitution? What’s that? 🙄🙄🙄
ReplyDeleteIt's good of you to share this information with those that are affected.
ReplyDeleteI thought this voter purge was happening only in India. Here, my wife's name just vanished from the voters' list as did hundreds of thousands of others. Since I live in a state that doesn't have too many right-wingers, I got that rectified. But too many people's citizenship is under question here in India with Modi's policies.
ReplyDeleteI'm so sad that this is happening. It shouldn't be happening anywhere.
DeleteIt’s ironic in a way that those of us who honored the custom of taking your husband‘s last name are now going to be totally screwed over
ReplyDeleteNot ironic. It's by design. They don't want women voting. If they had an easy way to disenfranchise single women, they would do it in a heartbeat.
DeleteLooks like the Orange Felon will do anything to stay in office.
ReplyDeleteHoly 1901! Women are going backward in your country. This is just disgusting and I pray he is stopped soon. The rest can all scurry under the rocks from whence they came. Why would they, meaning everyone, allow this to take place including destroying part of the white house. He realizes he won't be there for another 10 yrs..oh wait, he does think he will be. I hope the guy in the video is right.
ReplyDeleteThat's a great question that I want an answer to as well. Why isn't anyone stopping them? You better believe that I am also very angry at the Dems who are in office right now who are approving this guy's nominees and just going along with what's happening. They can be throwing sand in the gears, and they're not.
DeleteAs Tomi mentioned above, a similar exercise is ongoing in India. It's called the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls.
ReplyDeleteIt's basically an updating of the rolls, and no one is finding fault with the aim of the exercise.
But, where it has run into real controversy (so much so that a case is being heard in the Supreme Court) is the methods being adopted to update the rolls. There is total confusion and chaos. Names have vanished from rolls, legitimate testimonials aren't being accepted, and so and so forth.
It is said that discrepancies in spelling of names, placement of initials, etc. are all are leading to massive problems; and voters being forced to run from pillar to post.
Here in Karnataka, the exercise is set to commence some time this year. I will get a first-hand experience of how it is.
In my state to register you only either need a driver's license, permit, state ID card, or just the last four digits of your Social Security number. If I had to show my birth certificate it wouldn't match my driver's license, except my maiden name is there as a middle name. If states have already checked birth certificates to issue IDs, there is no reason to not accept state IDs to register to vote. Other than they want to make it harder. Those fines are ridiculous! A lot of people don't drive, and don't get the non-driver IDs, which are helpful in a lot of circumstances anyway.
ReplyDeleteMy son got Real ID, and it was quick, arrived quickly too. But, our DMV isn't anywhere as busy as some.
I regularly get emails from my representatives, I signed up for them. They let me know what they are working against... and for, but lately it's been a lot more againsts. Think how much the government could get done if they didn't keep everyone busy with these issues.
I know, right? If only they spent time trying to fix things, they'd get so much done. But no... We need to find ways to fix non-issues.
