The Widower

At the heart of much speculative fiction (and fiction in general) is a question. What if? On Tuesdays I like to throw one out there and see what you make of it. Do with it as you please. If a for-instance is not specified, feel free to interpret that instance as you wish. And if you find this becomes a novel-length answer, I'd appreciate a thank you in the acknowledgements ;)

The other day, The Bachelor was on in the other room. No, I wasn't watching it. Not really my kind of show. But hearing some of their antics, I had a strange thought...

What if they had a bachelor-type show, but for the older set? Much older. Would anyone want to watch a dating show for sexagenarians? Or septuagenarians? What sort of show would that be?

  1. No thanks. It would be just as scripted.

  2. Hi Liz - people do crazy things to get themselves on tv - but not for me, or not entertainment as I see it ... cheers Hilary

  3. I don't think it would be nearly as interesting, because people that age are seldom in relationships for sex (at least that's my perception). I think most of the appeal for bachelor-type shows has to do with the sex appeal of the candidates.

    1. I kind of hope at that age we could be interesting. Otherwise, why grow older?

  4. I'd probably watch an episode or two to check it out. I have a feeling it would be entertaining since as people get older they generally don't have as much of a filter on what they say. :D

    1. Ah yes. And let's hope they'd not suffer fools...

  5. Sure I would watch it. In fact I think it would have far more substance than the Bachelor. Older people are by far much wiser and not into a relationship for the sex!! I don't watch the Bachelor by the way!

    1. I don't either. But I also think it would be way more interesting. Well, I hope. You never know with how the contestants get managed by the producers.

    2. That is so true. And that is what we all have to keep in mind when we watch Reality TV. And there is several shows I watch!!

  6. I avoid those types of shows but I would have to watch a show when it would involve people who are 75 and up. I think that would be a hoot! They can't look like Sophia Loren, Jane Fonda or anyone who has had way too much plastic surgery. I would want to see the ordinary old folks. You better believe they want sex! The men more than the women but they are not dead...it would just be funny when they are trying to be flirtatious or seeing them get into a jacuzzi...allowing they can of course. I picture them taking their meds and putting their teeth in...or out:) I would watch that for sure:)

  7. I never understood the appeal of reality shows in the first place, so I'm not sure if one geared towards older people would be popular or not. It's all confusing to me.

  8. It could be a cute show. I would have to watch it a few times and see if it continued to hold my interest. Could be interesting too if you involve family members and how they would feel if their mom/dad were to get remarried :)

  9. I would like to see a show like that (full disclosure: I don't watch The Bachelor/ette) IF it fought stereotypical depictions of older people and sex. But if such a show really went on the air, they would probably screw (no pun intended) it all up. Alana ramblinwitham.blogspot.com

    1. In all likelihood, it would be run by the types that make those shows now, so they would probably screw it all up.

    1. I wonder if for this type of show if they'd find only good looking seniors. Considering the types that run these shows, probably.

    1. You think this one is strange, it's too bad Through the Wormhole isn't making new shows at the moment. I go really out there after watching one of those.

  12. What fun!! Just think of all that experience they could share :):) I'd watch it, even though I've never seen the Batchelor. That's just a complete waste of writing time :)

  13. Oh my gosh. I bet it would be a hoot! Older people have no filters and would probably be a riot with the crazy things they say.

  14. I don't like reality shows period and dating shows are just stupid imo.

  15. I get the feeling you and I have very similar tastes. But your idea for a show actually sounds like it could be cool. Older people can be really awesome.
