Missing

Ms. D had warned me about her class before I filled in. But I didn't realize how many familiar faces there would be. Blaine was there...

He wasn't as bad as he was last year, but he was still a handful. If I had a dollar for every time I had to ask him to sit down... And he was out of class once every day to use the restroom. Which might not sound like an issue, but one has to wonder why he can't remain in class for a full period.

The last day I was in class they were to watch a video. Blaine approached asking if he and a girl could go and take care of something having to do with the school's annual canned food drive. Turns out he and the girl were in student government.

As it was the last day before break and I knew he wasn't going to sit still for the video, I allowed it.

A short time later, I got a call from the office. Blaine was needed in the front office because his probation officer was there.

Naturally.

It was then that I realized I didn't have a clear idea of where Blaine said he was going to be. There was something about a class getting extra cans that they got credit for and... It was vague. (And I don't usually let students out of class without knowing exactly where they're going to be.)

After some hemming and hawing, I realized he must be in the ASB room. I called over there. Only, he wasn't there. The office also called there and called me back. I was to send Blaine up as soon as I saw him.

(This is a headdesk moment. I should have known where he was. I had to remind myself that usually when the office calls, I send the student right away. This was an anomaly.)

Blaine did return a short time later. So, I sent him on his way again. This time, I knew exactly where he went.

That's what I get for being a little lax before a holiday.

  1. It amazing when I got out of school and got out into the real world I wish I took my education more serious.
    I bet Blaine will too.

    1. Yeah, I just want to shake some of them. It's just too easy for them to take it all for granted.

  2. Wonder if they were off in a corner somewhere making out instead?

  3. That is so sad. Don't you just want to do something, say something that would get into this kid's head and turn him around?
Btw, I don't fault you. Trust is a precious commodity. It isn't a bad thing to give it. It's the recipient's fault for not recognizing its value.

  4. He's definitely someone you have to keep an eye on. Though he was probably just smoking in the bathroom.

    1. Well, he couldn't get off campus. (Locked gates.) So, he had to be somewhere.

  6. Figures the one time you do become lax is when you are reminded not to be lax. Glad he eventually showed up to his probation officer :)

  8. Poor Blaine, if only he knew now what he will know in 15-20 years...

  9. Ohmygoodness. When a student says they are in student government, it makes you think they are responsible and on top of their game. I don't blame you at all for letting him go sort out problems with another student. Makes total sense. But that call from the office that he has a probation officer that is there to see him? Argh.

At least this was a one time occurrence. Everybody makes mistakes. Especially when your mind is preoccupied with things like the upcoming holidays.

    1. He didn't tell me he was in student government. I think his teacher said something to that effect. Or something.

  10. No good deed goes unpunished. A parole officer? I find it ironic that a person involved in a food drive and student government has one. I guess it takes all kinds. Glad you were able to track him down.

  11. Probation officer?!! My head must be ...never mind where it is but I guess I am so naive because I am still trying to get over the fact that he is already in that much trouble. Don't worry about not knowing as this is normal especially since it was one of the very, very few times, you did not know and it was the time he had to go to the office.

    1. One of the schools in the district has a probation officer assigned. He has an office there and everything. "His" students have to sign in every day. (Sorry. Didn't mean to make your head explode.)

  12. He's actually on the student government? Maybe there is hope for him yet. I, too, was alarmed to read about a probation officer. What a handful.
