Kind of Expected

Rain was in the forecast for later in the day and for the weekend. It had rained the previous day. And while it hadn't yet rained that Friday, it was cold and dark. It smelled like rain.

Third period. There was a fire drill scheduled. (I hate fire drills.)

The lesson plan had me skipping the checking of the homework to account for the shortening of time they'd be in class.

But I was 90% sure that they'd cancel. Because, really. The kiddos scream when it starts raining and they're indoors.

Third period started. I gave the correct-the-homework instruction. I took roll. I passed out the day's assignment. And the time for the drill rolled around...

The principal came on the PA system. Due to weather, the fire drill would be postponed...

Yeah, I called that one. (The class, however, was disappointed. They wanted to get out of chemistry.)

Third period ended. I looked out the door. It was raining.

Are you a fan of fire drills? How about a good rainy day?

Today's A to Z Challenge post brought to you by the letter...

  1. I remember more in grade school than in high school. Maybe they figured the older kids were smart enough to know what to do.
Glad you didn't have to stand in the rain. The amount of kids bugging you to let them go back to their lockers for umbrella would've made you nuts.

  2. we never had a fire drill at school. We didn't even have any drills when were bombed for three months day and night by USA and NATO, which is very weird, since you'd expect some instructions in such a vile situations :)

  3. As long as they are occasional and not the norm, I like rainy days. They are a good excuse to hibernate.

  4. Everyone does always want to get out of class, but I'd take chemistry over bad weather any day. There's nothing less fun than sitting out in the cold while there's a fire drill...

  5. I must admit that any chance to get out of work or school for a few minutes never bothered me, and I love rainy days as long as they don't come too many in a row. But I can see how it would make your job more difficult. Thank you for stopping by my blog. I'm enjoying McGuffy's Reader, for sure.

  6. I used to like fire drills; it was a break in the usual routine.

  7. I love an occasional rainy day when I can stay indoors and don't have any errands.

  8. Fire drills always made us excited in high school. We'd gossip that there were firefighters taking one student as like a test to make sure the teachers took roll call. No idea if that ever happened though.

    1. We don't get firefighters for drills. They only show up if there's an actual fire. (Which has happened...)

  9. I never minded fire drills but I hated the air-raid drills where we'd all have to get under our desks and cover our heads. That was back in the 60s...

Did you knit your letter K? It's cool!

    1. I did knit the K. As I did all the letters.

We still do drop and cover drills. But that's what they're called. And they're supposedly for earthquakes.

  10. I don't mind fire drills and I remember them when I was a kid. We had a rainy day the other day and I loved it.

  11. I never liked fire drills, but I realize that they are a necessity some places. Good to even have a plan at home. A rainy day is wonderful, if I can stay home! Or we used to load up in the truck or jeep and ride old backroads and pipelines when it rained. But I have no love of making my 67 mile round trip commute in the rain!

  12. When I taught kindergarten, I disliked fire drills. I was always afraid a child would wander off during the drill, but my students did it surprisingly well. I also disliked rainy days because it kept them inside too long with nowhere to release their energy!

    1. That's why I hate them. Not so much that I worry someone's going to wander off. More that at their age, they might just go off somewhere else by choice. And since I don't know them (they usually start at the beginning of the period, so I've barely taken roll), it's hard to know which group is "mine".

  13. I prefer fire drills to lockdown drills. The littlies think they're real and start crying.

    1. We don't get lockdown drills. We just get lockdowns. (Although, it's been a while.)

  14. I actually feel guilty about enjoying the sun I've been getting up here in NorCal because I know how much we need the rain here in California. So right now, I welcome the rain, but more so when I'm indoors or in bed at night.

  15. I love rain! And as a kid, I loved fire drills! Free period ftw?! But a fire drill in the rain? Even as a kid I don't think I would have been happy about that. Maybe the kids didn't realize it was raining outside?

    1. Oh, they knew. We're talking 10th and 11th graders.

  16. As a student, I loved fire drills because of that whole no-class thing. I never cared if it was raining. As a teacher, though, I would not have enjoyed it, but we only did them on good weather days.

  17. I am not a fan of fire drills! I know they are necessary, but it seems that they always get scheduled during the most important time of the day, or right in the middle of a science experiment! Rainy Days are the best if I can stay home and watch movies. Otherwise, teaching during a rainy day is kind of dumb! :) Great post!

    1. It's not so bad if we're indoors. It's just lunch and passing periods that are awful in the rain.

  18. I did like fire drills when I was a student :) Always fun to get out of class like that :)

I had to laugh about the comment that the kids scream when it rains, even indoors :) But then it never rains in California :)

  19. Not a fan of fire drills! Way too many stairs to get to the lobby level in my building at work lol!

    1. Ah, that makes sense. No stairs for us, though.

  20. Fire drills used to irritate me! Especially at work. But after my fire experience at the hospital I started to take them more seriously. They would never cancel for rain. They said "what if there is a fire and it is raining outside"!!

    1. I guess you didn't have a muddy field to stand in. We did have to evacuate on one of the coldest mornings back in January. A teacher turned on his heat, and the thing was smoking. We were out there for a while for them to check everything out and make sure we were safe.

  21. Liz, speaking from a student stand point, there were times I liked it. I made the day a bit more interesting, but most of the time I could care less. It simply didn't bother me. I'm just glad we never had to actually have to fall on what we learned from those fire drills, though.

  22. I liked fire drills when I was a pupil, it was nice to have those few minutes of excitement! I would hate to try and organise one as a teacher though, logistical nightmare I imagine
