Design Fail

Because I searched out cell phone stands on Etsy (looking at the competition) for...

A gift for your friend who's always on the phone

...I get like items "suggested". And the other day, this popped up...

Ceramic cell phone holder, Parkmiphone

...and I was fascinated. Those are ceramic scrolls. Isn't that cool? (If you click on the picture, it'll take you to the listing.)

Then my brain engaged, and I thought, "I wonder if I could knit something like that?"

Turns out, right now, the answer is no. Because I've tried. Knit a long strip. Rolled it up. But the ereader (I made it bigger to fit my Nook) will not stay put.

Deep sigh.

I'm not sure what else I need to make this work. Maybe it won't work. I'm open to hearing any ideas.

  1. Its cool design, but I can't see it with the flimsiness of yarn unless you stuff it with something?

    1. Ah. A pillow-like item. (Like what I did before.) Maybe.

  2. Oh that's really neat. I could totally see using that to hold up recipe cards too while cooking. Hope you're able to figure something out!

  3. I guess the base would have to be something really heavy. Rolling up pieces of metal sounds like a lot of work.

  4. I love Etsy! It's been such a wonderful place for freelance artists to sell their unique products. :) Those cell phone holders are definitely interesting. LOL This is out of my budget, but I've always considered getting a Ringly so that I'm on my phone less, and just rely on the Ringly to alert me with any emergencies.

    1. I have never heard of Ringly. I'll have to look that up.

  5. Maybe you could get something that you mold in that shape and then knit over it. I'm just not sure what would work. Is there any kind of plastic thing that's the right shape?

  6. You'd need a stiff material. Maybe you can knit something over a stiff object to get the same effect.

  7. That scroll is cute! I agree with Sherry that you'd need something stiff. Yarn is too soft and yielding. I think JE has a good idea. If you can find something plastic or leather in the shape you want to prop up these devices, knit sleeves to go over them. Sell the object and the sleeve together. A removable sleeve would also make it easily washable.

  8. A little pillow holding sand or the stuff they put on beanie babies maybe?

    1. If I made a pillow look like that? Because a pillow holds the thing nicely without any extra weight.

  9. It looks like a duct tape roll to me! Neat. Sorry I'm not good with construction ideas. Can you slide something (like folded duct tape?) inside?

    1. Perhaps I should try it with duct tape...? Nah.

  10. There's some sort of flicky thing that the kids are playing with that they sort of snap onto their wrists. It starts out as a tight circle and then you unroll it. It's about an inch wide and when it's long you sort of snap it onto your wrist and it folds up again. That might be the worst description ever. But if it means anything to you, perhaps you could slide one or 2 into a casing on your woolies and see if that works?

    1. Ah yes. I didn't know they were still around, actually. They were big about 20 years ago.
